Strategies To Keep Architecture and Interior Design Projects on Budget and On Schedule

July 23, 2024

Every project starts with two basic questions, how much will it cost and when will it be done? ID Studios works closely with our clients to establish and monitor these two factors throughout the project. Here is our approach.

Project Management

ID Studios strives to meet our client’s needs by having an established project management process in place to ensure that project scope, schedule, and budget are maintained. How do we do this?

  • Early in the process, we validate projects against the basis of design documents, known project information, and risk assessment.
  • We schedule regular pricing/budget checks throughout the design process to confirm mutually agreed-upon milestone dates with the project team ensuring on-time, on-budget delivery.
  • Work with the contractor to ensure project costs match the client’s expectations.

Establishing Schedule & Milestones

At the start of each project, ID Studios will prepare a fully coordinated project schedule with the design team, client, consultants, and general contractor which will illustrate design activities, phases, and presentations including:

  • Consultant’s services
  • Vendor due dates and activities
  • Client decision due dates
  • Client approval due dates

Prior to finalization and distribution to all other project team members, ID Studios reviews the schedule closely with the client to make sure we’re all on the same page.

Budget Oversight

Our client’s long-range project interests are best served when the selected general contractor and its designated subcontractors prepare and present project cost estimates to ensure accuracy and to avoid surprises.

  • Those performing the work will provide more accurate figures to help reduce the change order and contingency potential during construction administration.
  • ID Studios understands our client’s concern for cost control and that effective cost management depends on regularly monitoring the impact of design decisions on the budget.
  • The design team engages with the client and the general contractor throughout the Design, Cost Estimating, and Value Engineering processes.
  • Project budget and cost estimate monitoring will be led by our project manager.
  • Estimates at each phase are concurrently compared with the client’s target budget and design intent and adjustments to the design may be made as necessary.
  • Deductive alternates can be designed as needed during Schematic Design and Design Development to understand cost effective options and impact.

By using this model, we produce projects that are consistently bid within budget and built at the estimated construction cost.

Conclusion

A well-administered project leads to a successful project and team. Our management process consistently monitors the A&E team and construction process to ensure all aspects of project delivery leads to a successful receipt of Certificate of Occupancy. We are proud of our reputation for delivering a balanced approach to budget, schedule, and strategic design goals.
